MET IIB: Manufacturing technology and materials

This module builds on the content of 3P1 (Materials into products) , and aims to provide students with insight into modern manufacturing processes, with real examplesfrom leading industrialists. In recent years, this has included presentations on manufacturing with lasers, advanced machining, carbon fibre composites for formula 1 components, electronic component manufacture, ceramics production, food production, joining processes, IC manufacture, rapid manufacturing and designing automated assembly systems.

Module learning outcomes

On completion of the module students should be able to:

  • Relate their MET1 learning to a range of industrial contexts
  • Understand/appreciate the range of materials, technologies and processes involved in current best practice manufacturing
  • Describe future trends in these areas
  • Make appropriate choices of materials and manufacturing processes in a business context
  • Relate these choices to product and process design
